Town Clerk's Office
Town Hall Melbourne,
February 11th 1867
Sir,
Referring to your letter of the 7th ultimo complaining of injury done to the northern
Botanical Gardens reserve, by the ingress of cattle from the Yarra Park, and recommending
that discontinuance of grazing therein with a view to plantations, and to forming
avenues in the Park, I have the honor by direction of the Health Committee of the
Council of the City of Melbourne to suggest that until it shall become necessary to
open and form the Yarra Bank Road, you should extend the side fences of the reserve
by the Yarra leaving still panels as turnstiles for foot passengers.

See also M to E. FitzGibbon, 21 January 1867. M's letter complaining of damage done to trees in the Botanic Gardens land north
of the Yarra by cattle depasturing in Yarra Park was read at a meeting of the Melbourne
City Council Health Committee on 28 January 1867: 'It appears that Dr Muellers men
had taken away a large portion of fencing which had been thrown down by the Floods
in Yarra Park Road. Town Clerk instructed to reply to Doctor Muellers letter that
he must provide against the cattle trespassing on his ground by extending the fence.
Town Clerk instructed to write to the Contractor for the Botanical Gardens Bridge
to repair and make good the portions of the fence removed and injured by his workmen.'
(Unit 1, VPRS 4039, Public Record Office, Victoria). See also M to E. FitzGibbon,
14 February 1867.
In respect to the planting of the Park, I am to inform you that the Committee have
the subject under consideration.
I have the honor to be
Sir
Your obedient Servant
E. G. FitzGibbon
