I shall be happy, dear Mr Hodgkinson, to supply to the reserves under your control 600 Pinus Pinaster as you desire; they are transplanted as rather small seedlings some weeks ago, but will be large enough to be taken out of the ground in May next. These fir plants are of course not potted, but will stand moving from the open seedbeds well.
Of Pinus insignis I have about a hundred larger plants in pots; the others I have are too small for transplanting next autumn. I can however furnish 500 other Californian and Himalaian pines, to make up the 600 you require for the park reserves.
With most friendly regards

Ferd Mueller.

On 27 December 1865, Hodgkinson minuted: 'The plants proposed to be supplied by Dr Mueller will suit admirably for the purpose for which they are required. I therefore attach a formal requisition for them.' On 2 January he added: 'Thank Dr Mueller for the offer herein made, and state that I shall be glad to receive the plants he has specified in May next. With reference to the Western Australian Mahogany plants I shall be able to make provision for as many as can be possibly spared; perhaps Dr Mueller could supply 400.' C. Hodgkinson to M, 2 January 1866 is the resulting letter. On 6 April 1866, Hodgkinson instructed: 'Inform Dr Mueller that as the Bd of L. & W has made arrangements for planting in the reserves vested in the Bd of L & W about 4000 trees during this season it is necessary that, with the very limited supply of labour at the command of the Bd, an immediate commencement be made in the putting out of the potted pines and cypresses to be supplied by Dr Mueller. Dr Mueller is therefore requested to deliver to the Park Inspector Mr Bickford, the 100 large specimens of potted Pinus Insignis which Dr Mueller, in his letter dated 2nd Decr 1865 undertook to supply together with 500 other choice potted Californian & Himalayan Pines & Cypresses.' On the same day his assistant, J. Lewis, minuted: 'letter accordingly' and wrote to M signing 'For the Assistant Commissioner of Lands & Survey', i.e. Hodgkinson.
