Council Chambers
East Collingwood
May 3rd 1865
Dear Sir,
Referring to my communication of the 15th of September last and the favorable reply you were pleased to forward on that occasion I have the honor to renew the application then made on behalf of this Borough for an assortment of trees, plants, and shrubs suitable at the present season to plant the Darling Gardens and the Borough Council Reserve both of which places are substantially fenced in, & contain in the aggregate about twenty acres.

At an East Collingwood Borough Council meeting, 25 April 1865, 'Cr Page drew the attention of the council to the advisability of communicating with Dr. Mueller, with a view of procuring plants and shrubs with which to ornament their public grounds. Several councillors coincided with Cr. Page, and it was decided to take advantage of the suggestion.' (East Collingwood observer, 22 April 1865).
For a summary of this letter, see Council minutes, VPRS 11090, unit 3, p. 149, VA 439 East Collingwood Borough Council records, Public Record Office, Victoria. The same page includes minutes of a meeting of the Council held on 9 May, where it is recorded that a letter from M was read 'offering a supply of plants for the Borough Reserve and Darling Gardens' and that this was referred to the Council's Public Works Committee.
At a meeting of the Public Works Committee held on 5 June 1865, 'The Town Clerk reported that he had received from the Curator of the Botanical Gardens an assortment of plants & shrubs to the number of 300 for the purpose of planting the Borough Reserve. The Committee recommends that the thanks of the Council be forwarded to Dr Mueller for his attentive consideration.' (Public Works Committee minute book, East Collingwood Borough Council records, Public Record Office, Victoria).
J. Moulines to M, 21 June 1865 expresses the thanks of the Council, and asks for more plants.
A liberal supply of the seed known as "Victoria He kea"
