Letter not found. For the text given here, see Argus, 9 February 1865, p. 5. The letter was laid before the Council of the Acclimatisation Society of Victoria, 7 February 1865.
Osprey left San Francisco on 22 November 1864 and arrived in Sydney 31 January 1865 (Sydney morning herald, 1 February 1865). The Melbourne Herald, 7 February 1865, p. 3, published a letter from Coppin dated 22 November 1864, in which he mentioned that he was sending the letter 'by a small vessel direct to Sydney, by which I ship to Dr. Mueller some more sweet potatoes for seed, and some mountain quail — a most beautiful bird upon the wing, and delicious eating'. The letter to Mueller evidently arrived with the same mail in Melbourne, and is therefore dated to on or before 22 November 1864.
[Dr. Mueller laid before the council a letter he had received from Mr. G. S. Coppin, wherein Mr. Coppin states he has shipped per Osprey a cage containing a dozen of the large mountain quail of California.
