In Santiago, Chile. Since Ledger reports going to Santiago and visiting the Botanic Gardens only a few days after he first arrived at Valparaiso, he must have carried the seeds he mentions from Australia, and so received these from M before the ship that carried him to South America sailed in July 1864.
… I am promised by the director a quantity of valuable seeds and plants to be delivered to my order next March and April. I gave him a number of packets of Australian seeds, kindly sent to me by Dr. Mueller.]
